🔥The Internet is Cooked: May 25, 2026
Good morning. The UN's top court made strike protection international law, private equity got caught red-handed cursing the Red Sox, and Toronto's greatest indie collective is back with a banger.
Workers' right to strike is now protected by international law. The International Labour Organization (ILO) Governing Body explicitly requested this International Court of Justice (ICJ) opinion in 2023 to resolve persistent disagreements among governments, employers, and workers. By 10 votes to 4, the ICJ ruled "the right to strike of workers and their organizations is protected" under the Freedom of Association and Protection of the Right to Organize Convention, 1948. The convention has been ratified by 158 countries, including Canada, and is incorporated into guidelines from the United Nations, Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development, and international trade agreements. The US hasn't ratified it. Even if not legally binding, the opinion carries major weight globally. The ILO Governing Body is scheduled to formally address and implement the ruling at its session in November 2026.
In Maine, Graham Platner is here to reverse the private equity curse and campaigning with Bernie to fight oligarchy (catch Bernie's speech). Platner dropped the ad "The Curse" on Friday on NESN during the Red Sox game. The cable station, which happens to be owned by the Red Sox' parent company, removed it from the airwaves midway through. The Red Sox immediately blew a 4-0 lead after the ad got pulled, went on to lose the game 8-6, and have lost every single game since. We believe in sports juju, and pulling that ad created some incredibly bad juju. We got our dunkies, and it’s still a team sport folks. Feel. The. Bern.
Soundtrack: Broken Social Scene just came back. This Canadian collective features core members and vocal contributions from longtime collaborators Feist, Lisa Lobsinger, and Hannah Georgas. Remember the Humans dropped on May 8th. It’s their first album in nearly a decade, and it is finally here to restore our faith in indie rock with community and connection.
Solidarity forever,
The internet is cooked.
